Straight answers about Alarm.com in Ottawa.
How much does a home security system cost in Ottawa?
Monitoring on its own is $9.99 a month for the first year and $14.99 after, plus HST, over an existing panel’s phone line. A monitored security system on the Alarm.com app starts at $14.99 the first year and $19.99 after on the Universal Communicator plan, which puts a panel you already own on the app; a full system runs on Interactive at $19.99 the first year and $24.99 after. Equipment is separate and quoted in writing: a typical two-door, one-motion system with a new IQ Panel 5 comes to just under $1,000 installed. There is no activation fee and no contract. Build one and see the price.
Do you install security cameras, or only alarm systems?
Both, and on the same account. We supply, install and monitor Alarm.com security cameras and video doorbells: indoor, outdoor with a spotlight, battery cameras where there is no wiring, and PoE door stations. Cameras add a video service to your monthly, from $7 a month for one or two. The cameras we fit.
Is this a real monitored alarm, or just an app?
A real monitored alarm. Every plan on this site includes 24/7 professional alarm monitoring through Lanvac, a ULC-listed station, with live operators who call you and dispatch police, fire or medical. The Alarm.com app is what you use day to day; the monitoring is what happens when nobody is looking at the phone.
We are with ADT, Vivint, Telus or Bell. Can we switch to you?
Usually yes, and usually without replacing anything. If your panel already runs Alarm.com the account simply moves to us once your current provider releases the communicator, and you keep your panel, sensors, cameras and app history. If it is another platform, it can often still be taken over rather than replaced. How switching works.
Do you cover fire, smoke and carbon monoxide as well as burglary?
Yes, on every plan and at no extra monthly cost. Monitored smoke and heat detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, water and freeze sensors and a medical or panic button all report to the same ULC station as the burglar alarm, and police, fire and medical dispatch are included in the monitoring you already pay for. You pay for the detectors, not for the watching of them.
My alarm is going off right now and it is a false alarm. Who do I call?
Call the monitoring station directly on 1-877-526-8221 — that is Lanvac, our ULC-listed station, 24 hours a day. Have your account number and the verification password you gave us when the account was set up; they cannot stop a dispatch without them, and that protection is working for you even when it is inconvenient. Calling our office instead will slow things down, because we are not the ones holding the dispatch. Once it is sorted, call us on 613-233-1115 if something needs fixing.
Is standard monitoring included in the Alarm.com price?
Yes. The price you see is the whole monthly bill: 24/7 professional monitoring with police, fire and medical dispatch, plus the Alarm.com plan. Nothing is added on top except HST. The first-year rate is a discount on the monitoring portion, which is why the saving is $5 rather than the whole plan.
Do I have to replace my existing alarm system to get Alarm.com?
Usually not. DSC PowerSeries, PowerSeries Neo and Pro panels and Honeywell/Ademco VISTA 10P, 15P, 20P and 21iP panels take an Alarm.com communicator and keep the panel and keypads. Many older panels with a phone dialer can use the Alarm.com Universal Communicator. Resideo ProSeries, VISTA H3 and Lyric systems run on Total Connect instead, which we also offer.
Can I keep my old panel and just have it monitored?
Yes — that is standard monitoring, $9.99 a month for the first year and $14.99 after, plus HST. The panel stays exactly as it is: no app, no new hardware, and it is not Alarm.com or First Alert. It reports the way it always has, by dialling the station over your phone line, so the line has to stay.
One catch worth knowing first: it cannot be a VoIP line — phone service delivered by your internet or cable provider. Those connections drop alarm signals, silently, and the phone itself keeps working so nothing looks wrong. If that is your line, a cellular communicator or a newer system is the honest answer, and we will go through it with you — more on that here.
Does Alarm.com need a phone line or internet?
No phone line. Alarm.com plans use a cellular (LTE) communicator — we fit the AT&T radio, which roams across Canadian partner networks rather than being locked to one carrier — and most modules also use your home internet as a second path.
Can I add cameras or a doorbell later?
Yes. Video plans add to any Alarm.com plan at any time: Pro Video with Analytics for $13 a month or Premium Video for $18 a month, each covering up to four cameras. A doorbell camera counts as one of the cameras.
I already have Alarm.com with another company. Can I switch to Accurate Security?
Often, yes. If your panel and communicator are current Alarm.com equipment and your present dealer releases the account, we can move it to ours and keep your app history. We check the equipment before you cancel anything; call with the panel brand or send a photo of it.
How do I know there is good cellular signal at my address?
Our Alarm.com panels report over their own LTE connection. You can check your address on the carrier maps or a postal-code comparison before you call us, and your own phone's bars where the panel would go are a decent proxy. Either way the panel measures its own signal during setup, and if it is marginal we move it, add an external antenna, or run it dual path over your internet with cellular as backup. More on that here.
I already have Alarm.com through another company — can I switch to you?
Yes, and you keep your equipment. An Alarm.com communicator can only be attached to one provider at a time, so your current one has to release it. The clean route is a dealer transfer, where they hand the account over from inside their Alarm.com portal and nothing is interrupted. They can decline that — it is voluntary — but they cannot keep the account open against your wishes: when you cancel and it closes, the communicator is released and we activate it on a fresh account with the same panel and the same app. What genuinely holds people up is a contract still in its term, equipment that was leased rather than sold, or a panel locked by the installer. Talk to us before you cancel anything and we will tell you where you stand. The full process is here.
Is there a contract? How do I cancel?
No contract. Month to month from day one, with no renewal increase built in — there is no term to sign, no buy-out and no auto-renewal. To cancel, give us 30 days’ notice. The payments stop and the system is deactivated at the end of that period. It is not instant, because there is a process: every device has to be properly taken off monitoring and the Alarm.com account closed, so nothing keeps reporting, dispatching or billing after you leave. One honest note: if we get less than 30 days’ notice, there may be one more monthly payment. We are billed for your monitoring and your Alarm.com account until they are properly shut off, and that is the one thing we cannot stop on short notice — we would rather tell you now than surprise you later. Companies that give you “free” equipment are lending it to you and recovering it in a 36 or 60 month monitoring rate; add their monthly up over the term and compare it with ours. Do the math here.
Do I own the equipment?
Yes. You buy it once and it is yours — nothing to return, nothing to buy out, no removal invoice if you ever leave. Equipment is quoted upfront, per property, before anything is ordered.
Do you offer Alarm.com for businesses?
Yes. Alarm.com Commercial is $39.99 a month and Commercial Plus is $45.99, both plus HST with standard monitoring included: open/close reports, scheduled arming with automatic re-arming, staff codes from the app, activity insights and a multi-site dashboard. Remote Video Monitoring, where operators watch enrolled cameras when a person or vehicle is detected after hours, is quoted per site. Use the quote form on this page and tell us it is for a business — we will come back with numbers for your site.
Does Indigo need a home alarm system?
No. Indigo is a standalone personal safety wearable with its own cellular connection, so it works for someone with no alarm system at all, and it can also sit on an existing Alarm.com account. It is not available in Canada yet — expected within the next few months. We are keeping a list and will call when it lands.
We are renovating. What do we need to do about the alarm?
Put the account on test for the dusty days (call Lanvac direct on 1-877-526-8221, any hour — quickest route, and they do it while you are on the line), and cover the smoke and heat detectors near the work with a dust cover or a plastic bag and painter’s tape — sanding, cutting and painting dust looks like smoke to a detector. Cover them, never disconnect them, and take every cover off the day the dust stops. If doors or windows are being replaced, make sure the installer takes the sensors off carefully and keeps them — they are your equipment, and a damaged wireless sensor has to be replaced at your cost; wired ones also have wires in the frame. Never cover a carbon monoxide detector while gas tools or heaters are running, and treat a CO alarm as real. The full renovation checklist is here.
How do I pay?
Pre-authorized monthly debit from a void cheque. No monthly or yearly invoicing and no credit cards; that is how rates stay stable.
Who answers when my alarm goes off?
A live operator at Lanvac, the ULC-listed monitoring station we have used for over 25 years, 24 hours a day. Operators verify before dispatching police, fire or ambulance to protect you from false-alarm fines.
What areas do you serve?
Ottawa and the surrounding region: Nepean, Kanata, Barrhaven, Orleans, Gloucester, Stittsville, Manotick, Richmond, Rockland, Kemptville and the rural communities between. Ontario only; we do not service Quebec, including Gatineau.
Is accuratesecurity.ca/alarm-com the same company as accuratesecurity.ca?
Yes. Both are Accurate Security, a division of Home Service Group Inc. at 36 Capital Drive in Nepean. This page covers our Alarm.com plans; accuratesecurity.ca is our main site: the company, standard monitoring from $9.99 a month, what happens when an alarm goes off, the areas we cover and how to reach us.
What happens if I set off a false alarm?
Your panel gives you the entry delay to disarm, and if it does trip, the station calls you before anyone is dispatched — that is the whole point of the verification call, and it stops most false alarms right there. If police do attend a false alarm, Ottawa's bylaw allows the city to bill the property owner for repeat occurrences, so it is worth getting to the cause. If a false alarm is caused by our equipment or our installation, we fix it at our cost. If it is caused by a pet, an open window or a code nobody remembered, we will show you what triggered it — the app logs every event — and adjust the system so it does not happen again. If you are the one setting it off on purpose — testing the system — put the account on test first by calling Lanvac direct on 1-877-526-8221, any hour of any day. That one call is the difference between a test and a false alarm fee.
Will a monitored system lower my home insurance?
Usually, and a lot of people never claim it. Most Canadian insurers give a discount for a professionally monitored burglar alarm, and a further one when fire is monitored. Ask us for a monitoring certificate and send it to your broker — we issue them free, for any of our customers, any time. The discount varies by insurer and by what you have monitored, so ask your broker what theirs is worth before you decide how much to monitor.
What is the warranty on the equipment and the labour?
Equipment carries the manufacturer's warranty, and we handle the claim for you rather than handing you a phone number. Our workmanship is covered as long as you are monitored with us. What is not covered is damage, lightning, water, renovation mishaps and batteries, which are wear items — we will always tell you which one you are looking at before any charge.
What do you charge for a service call?
A service call is quoted before we come, and there is no truck charge and no mileage inside our service area. Warranty work and anything caused by our installation costs nothing. If a visit is needed for something outside that — a sensor damaged during a renovation, a device you want moved — we tell you the price on the phone and you decide.
Where is the monitoring station, and who answers?
Lanvac, a ULC-listed station we have used for over 25 years, with live agents in Canada and redundant facilities so a single site going down does not take monitoring with it. You are not calling an overseas call centre and you are not talking to an automated system when it matters.
How do I know the system is still reporting?
It checks in on its own. Alarm.com panels report over cellular several times a day, and if the panel stops talking the station knows without anyone noticing a dead keypad. Our Gold plan tightens that to a six-hour window and the supervision add-on to one hour. You can also see the last check-in yourself in the app — no phoning anyone to ask.
Do you lease equipment or do I own it?
You own it. We do not lease, and we do not finance equipment inside a monitoring rate. That matters when you sell the house: an owned system goes with the property, while a leased one has to be settled or removed first, and the buyer inherits a contract they never chose.
Who actually does the installation?
Our own technicians, not subcontractors picked up for the week. We have been installing in Ottawa since 1999, we are insured, and the same people who install your system are the ones who come back to service it.
