Monitoring only

Keep the panel you have. Just have it watched.

Your existing alarm, dialling out over your phone line the way it always has · $9.99/month the first year, then $14.99 plus HST · no contract · 613-233-1115

This is the simplest thing we sell, and for a lot of houses it is the right one. If there is a working alarm panel on the wall and a real telephone line in the building, we change who that panel dials and we change nothing else. No new box, no app, no equipment to buy.

It is not Alarm.com and it is not First Alert. There is no app and no phone control, because nothing new is being installed. What you get is the monitoring itself — which is the part that actually brings someone.

What you get

  • 24/7 ULC monitoring by Lanvac — the same station that watches every other account we have, and we have worked with them for over twenty-five years.
  • Police, fire and medical dispatch included in the rate. No per-dispatch charge.
  • Live Ottawa agents. No phone trees and no out-of-province call centre.
  • Free account set-up, programming and switch-over from your current company.
  • No contract. Month to month, thirty days’ notice, paid by pre-authorized bank payment from a void cheque.

What you do not get

Worth being plain about, because it is the whole difference in price:

  • No app, and no notifications on your phone.
  • No arming or disarming remotely — only from the keypad.
  • No cameras, doorbells, locks or thermostats.
  • No record of who armed or disarmed it, or when.

If any of that matters to you, say so on the phone and we will price the alternative instead. It costs more per month and it may need hardware; we will tell you which before you decide, not after.

One thing that rules it out: a VoIP line

If your “phone line” comes from your internet or cable provider, this will not protect you. Alarm signals are tones, and VoIP compresses and drops them. The worst part is that it usually seems fine — the panel tests, the keypad says it is armed — and it fails on the one night it is needed. If that is your line, tell us. We would rather talk you into something else than sell you a system that cannot call for help.

A copper line from Bell is fine. A line from a cable or internet provider, or a phone plugged into a router, is not. If you are not sure which you have, we can tell you in a minute on the phone.

Who this is usually right for

  • A panel that still works and a household that does not want an app.
  • A rental or second property where the alarm just needs to be watched.
  • Somebody leaving a national provider who does not want to replace working equipment to do it.
  • An older system where the honest answer is that it is fine as it is.

Common questions

Can I keep my old alarm panel and just have it monitored?

Yes. If the panel still works and you have a real telephone line, we change who it dials and nothing else. No new hardware, no app, no equipment cost. $9.99 a month for the first year, then $14.99 plus HST.

Will it work on a VoIP or internet phone line?

No, not reliably — see above. A line delivered over internet or cable drops alarm signals and usually keeps working right until the night it matters.

What do I not get with phone line monitoring?

No app, no push notifications, no arming or disarming from your phone, no cameras and no smart-home control. The panel behaves exactly as it always has. Everything you do get — 24/7 ULC monitoring, police, fire and medical dispatch, live Ottawa agents — is the same as on any of our plans.

Is there a contract?

No. Month to month with thirty days’ notice, the same as everything else we sell.

What if my panel turns out to be too old?

Then we will say so. Some panels are past the point where monitoring them is doing anybody a favour, and we would rather tell you that than take $9.99 a month for an alarm that will not report. Send a photo of the keypad and, if you can reach it, the panel box — usually in a basement, closet or utility room.
